Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is a world transforming technology that will soon touch many aspects of our lives. It is already being used to diagnose diseases, drive cars, create new drugs, design new products, and win art contests, and we’re stepping into a future where people who know how to use AI will have opportunities to create, design, and work in ways we simply cannot yet imagine. So how do you set yourself up to be one of the people who know how to use AI?

In this book we will answer that question by introducing you to a variety of AIs, and using GPT-3 as a general guide to working with AIs of all types. This book is not for programers working with AI or AI researchers, it's for everyday people who want to learn how they can start using AI for fun, to improve their work, or just to get ready for a future powered by Artificial Intelligence.

How do you use AI?

There is no one way to use AI. Every AI is different and every person’s needs are different. However, there are some ways that are more common than others. The most common way to use AI is to have it do something for you. This can be something as simple as doing your taxes for you, or it can be something more complicated like diagnosing diseases. Another way to use AI is to have it help you with something you are bad at. For example, you might use AI to help you come up with ideas for a new business, or to help you create a new product. AI can also be used to help you learn new things. You can use AI to learn a new language, or to learn about a different culture. AI can even be used to help you become a better person. You can use AI to track your own personal data, and see how you can improve your life.

In this book, you'll learn how to do some of these things for yourself using AI. We will start with the basics of AI, and then we will move on to more complicated things that you can do. We will also show you how to use GPT-3, a machine learning AI that is widely used in the AI community. GPT-3 is a great way to get started with AI, and it will give you a good foundation for working with other types of AIs.

Artificial Intelligence is always evolving by it's very nature, so we will update this book as needed to reflect the latest changes and advancements in the field. We hope you enjoy using AI, and we look forward to seeing all the amazing things you will do with it!

Remember, AI is something that can be a lot of fun, but it also has the potential to change the world. So learn all you can, and use AI to make a difference in the world. Don't be afraid to experiment and play around with AI. Just have fun with it! I'll try and help you understand how to do that as we explore AI together.

AIs you can use right now

In this book we will be using GPT-3, a machine learning AI that is widely used in the AI community. GPT-3 is a great way to get started with AI, and it will give you a good foundation for working with other types of AIs. However, there are many different types of AIs, and you should explore as many as you can to see which ones work best for you.

The following are some fun AIs you can play with right now.

GauGAN2 is a machine learning AI that is used to create photo realistic images. You can play with for free right now. Using a paint tool or a simple text input, you guide the AIs creation of the image.

Jasper and CopyAI are competing AIs designed to write marketing copy: blogs, social posts, white papers, and more. You can sign up for free trials of these tools to give them a shot. They're very similar to GPT-3 in that they are all natural language processing AIs. GPT-3 sets itself apart by being more general and flexible, while the usability and simplicity of Jasper and CopyAI make them easier to jump into.

Midjourney takes a simple text prompt and turns it into a beautiful, surreal image. It is a great AI to explore if you are interested in art and graphics. It's run through Discord and you can sign up for a free trial on their website.

Prompt: Agrarian vision of utopia

Google is a major player in AI and has created quite a few fun projects, one of the more interesting is one of the Infinite Drum Machine, which is a AI that uses everyday sounds to create beats.

This is just a short list of some of the more interesting AIs available right now. As you get more into AI, you'll find more and more AIs to try out. Just be sure to explore, play around, and have fun with them. for a more regularly updated list of interesting AI projects, you can checkout my evergreen list of top projects here.

Ethics and Economics of AI

No discussion of AI is complete without touching on the moral and economic impact we can expect AI is going to have in the future. The economic shift it will bring is already being called the fourth industrial revolution. On the one hand, AI offers great potential benefits for individuals, businesses, and governments. But on the other hand, there is a very real risk of massive job displacement and inequality, as well as concerns about privacy, security, and the misuse of AI technologies.

One simple example of the possible disruption of AI technology is the trucking industry. Truck drivers account for 3.5 million jobs in the United States and the industry is ripe for disruption by driverless cars. A study by Forrester Research predicts that 23% of jobs in the US will be replaced by 2030 as a result of automation, including many jobs in the transportation and logistics sector.

There is no doubt that the rise of AI will bring massive change to the way we live and work. We must be prepared for these changes, both socially and economically. These challenges are daunting, but they are also an incredible opportunity to shape the future of our world in a positive way. We hope that this book will help you understand the potential of AI, and that you will join us in working to make sure that the future is a bright one for everyone.

If you would like to learn more about the debate around the future of AI, I've provided a much more in depth discussion and a list of resources of the issue in appendix A. (Not available yet)

Assignment:

  • Pick an AI from the list above, and try it out. See how it works and what you can do with it.

  • Sign up for GPT-3 by going to: https://gpt-3.org/. This is a machine learning AI that is widely used in the AI community.

  • Once you have GPT-3 set up, you'll be ready for chapter 1.
